This page contains some links to the basic Megasquirt information available on the various MS sites and forums. First and foremost, Megasquirt is a DIY fuel injection system. This means the user of the system is responsible for reading through the information and learning how EFI works. Here are a couple basics that will allow you to better understand your first visit to the MS sites. Megasquirt is a collection of hardware and firmware projects. There are a few different versions of main controller boards and processors as well as different versions of firmware that can be loaded onto each processor. There are two basic versions of MS main board currently in use. The V2.2 board and the V3.0 board. Both boards use through-hole parts and were intended to be assembled as DIY kits although both boards can be ordered fully assembled. The V3.0 board is superior to the V2.2 board in just about every way and in my opinion is the only choice of board to use. There is a version of the V3.0 board called the V3.57 that is electrically almost identical to the V3.0 board but uses surface mount components and is only available fully assembled. There are two different processors currently used. Either processor can be installed on the V2.2 or V3.x main boards. The original processor is identified as the MS1 processor and the newer processor is identified as MS2. The MS2 processor is faster than the MS1 processor and has more flash memory. There are other differences that are explained in the MS2 manual. The firmware is identified by the processor it is intended to run on, MS1 or MS2. All firmware is developed as an open-source project, you can even modify and firmware yourself if you want. The basic version of the firmware was developed by the creators of the MS main boards. Another firmware project was started by another group of developers called "extra" firmware. This extra code is a completely different version of the firmware that has had a lot of new, "extra" features added to it by the MS community. These versions of firmware are called MS1-extra or MS2-extra. If this was not enough, there is also a product called MicroSquirt which is essentially a smaller version of the MS2 based controller intended for motorcycles, snowmobiles, jet skis, etc. It has a slightly different set of capabilities than the V3.0 / MS2 combination but is similar. MS supplier links are given on my favorite links page. Here are some links that can help introduce a person to the world of Megasquirt. Be aware that the MS forums do not typically respond to newbie questions that can be easily answered by doing a forum search. I recommend lurking on the forums for a period of time absorbing the information presented and searching as you read the on-line manuals.
