To make room for the oil cooler to mount in front of the radiator, I needed to move my electric cooling fan from in front of the radiator (pusher) to behind the radiator (puller). I had removed the engine driven cooling fan and shroud a couple years ago and have been using my Megasquirt controller to run the electric cooling fan. The problem was that there was not enough room between the radiator and the E21 water pump pulley to mount the fan in that location. The solution is to use a 2002 water pump and pulley. The nose on the 2002 water pump is about 5mm shorter than the E21 pump and the face of the pulley is 17mm closer to the engine. I'm hoping this provides the needed room for the electric fan.
Radiator For the first year I drove the car with the new 2.2L motor I used a re-cored OEM radiator. This radiator had a modern core but was only 1.5 inches deep. This radiator worked well most of the time but could not keep up on hot summer days or under constant high load such as climbing a long hill for several miles. I went back to the same local radiator shop that did my re-core and asked them to fabricate a custom aluminum radiator that was 3 inches deep with dual cores. Installation of this radiator required modification to the lower mounts as well as relocating the oil cooler mounting point to make room for new dual electric fans in front of the radiator.
